How often do you hear the saying that the key to nailing a job interview is to dress for success? Just because that saying is sometimes overused doesn't mean it isn't true. When it comes to finding a job, there is nothing more important than someone's first impression of you. After all, you are selling yourself to the interview and hopefully soon to be boss. The first thing they will see when they look at you is what you are wearing.

While your job interview is not a fashion show, not following some basic rules on what to wear can seriously damage your chances of getting that job. The clothes you wear is just as important as your resume so use it to help get your talent and personality noticed. So to help you out, here are a few rule for all you guys out there to follow when getting ready for your next job interview:

Clothes - Before you go on your interview, it is a wise decision to find out if the interview will be formal or not. If it is formal, then you have no choice but to wear a suit. You're best choice is to wear a basic black, dark gray or navy suit along with black leather shoes and a black belt, as well. Another popular choice for interviews are blue shirts since they compliment your skin tone and can be coordinated to match nearly all suit colors. You'll also find yourself on a few interviews that are not quite as formal and don't require a suit. That doesn't mean you can show up in jeans, however. The basic rule is wear something more dressier than what everyone in the office is wearing. You want to aim for dressy casual but not just woke up casual. You can't go wrong with wearing a pair of khakis along with a nice button-down shirt. Finish off this look with dress shoes and a matching belt.

Your belts and shoes - Just as important as what clothes you wear, so is your choice of shoes and belt too. At all times, your shoes and belt should match colors as well as the overall shade of everything else you have on. For example, if you are wearing black or gray on your interview, you should opt for black dress shoes. You would go with brown shoes if you're wearing medium toned colors. There is nothing wrong with polishing up your shoes either. You don't want to take the chance of not getting that job because of scuffed up shoes.

Cologne - While smelling nice for your interview sounds like a good idea in theory, it's actually something you may want to avoid. Try to not wear any cologne or aftershave for your interview. You run the risk of applying too much on and overwhelming the person interviewing you or they may simply not like the smell of what you are wearing. They'll quickly remember your cologne and not you when looking back at your resume.

Other accessories - A good rule to follow is to keep your accessories to a minimum and always professional. Your resume and any other paperwork should be kept in a bound portfolio. Jewelry should only consist of a wristwatch and cuff links at the most. All earring and nose rings should be removed if you want to be taken seriously.

The 1970s were a time of social change as the country transitioned from the hippie flower children of the 1960s to the neon couture of the 1980s. Men in the 70s enjoyed a laid back style with a variety of options from the extravagant disco fashions to more casual tee shirts and jeans. Men's fashion in the 1970s had a unique face with many facets to suit the changing times.

History
The radical social changes of the 1960s spilled over, influencing the early 1970s. Interest was high in areas such as civil rights, environmentalism, space exploration, and the women's movement. Station wagons and RVs roamed the roads with vacationing families and young adults exploring the country. Popular toys included lava lamps, pet rocks, and mood rings. Trends in fashion and culture leaned toward the bright, extravagant, and carefree as the disco era began.

Early 70s
The early 1970s saw a continuation of popular 60s fashions that had become mainstream. Bell bottom pants were all the rage and colorful patches decorated all types of clothing. Frayed jeans and tie dyed shirts remained fashionable. As the 70s progressed, many unisex trends took hold. The fitted blazer with wide lapels was popular for both sexes and could be found in a variety of colors and materials. Men also incorporated wide ties into this trend.

Mid to Late 70s
By the mid to late 70s, full three-piece suits came into style The jackets, with the same wide lapels that were popular on blazers, were paired with high rise vests and flared trousers. These were worn in bright colors and accompanied by bold flowered ties. Younger boys and teenagers lounged around in tee shirts and baseball jerseys. The plain white tee gave way to brighter hues including pink, purple, and green--all of which were considered suitable for men.

Disco
Disco fashion was bright and showy, designed to pop under the dance lights. These outfits were usually worn only in the evenings at disco clubs, but the colors and fabrics made their way into everyday attire as well. Polyester and Lycra were popular fabrics. Men's disco outfits usually consisted of bell bottoms, unbuttoned shirts, jackets, and gold chains. Platform shoes were popular.

Punk
In the late 70s, the Sex Pistols brought punk into the fashion spotlight. This style rejected previous cultural norms in favor of a dirtier look with a greater shock factor. Bleached, torn clothing accompanied by dark makeup was the hallmark of this style. Brightly dyed hair, usually spiked, accompanied the look. The punk look, which began to take hold in 1977, would carry through into the early 80s.

Color can seem to be such a mystery when it comes to clothing.

There are some people out there who seem to have it all together, who seem to be dressed perfectly all of the time - and then there are the rest of the people, the ones who can't seem to figure out what shirt goes with what pair of pants.

It doesn't help that adult clothing is much more complicated than children's clothing. Remember how the entire Garanimals clothing line for kids contained nothing but color-coordinated pieces - and how any pair of pants would match literally any shirt? This certainly isn't the case for men's clothing...

So, to help out with that, to make color-coordinating easier for men's clothing - here are some suggestions on how best to match colors when putting outfits together.

Now, these aren't 'rules,' as there can be many variations on how color is put together; however, following these suggestions can at least get you out the door without looking like a clown:

Avoid colored pants -
Colored pants really don't look good on men. Keep your pants a basic, neutral color-black, or some shade of grey, tan, khaki, or brown will do nicely and will be simple to match. Or, if you are dressing for a casual day, jeans would be great!

Since you have chosen neutrally-colored pants (or jeans), the rest of your outfit will not be difficult to choose as far as colors go.

If your pants are black or grey, stay away from shirts that have any shade of brown in them as these will not pair well. Pants that are tan, khaki or brown or jeans can be paired with just about any color of shirt.

Choosing a shirt -
When choosing a shirt color, though, it is wise to avoid choosing a shirt that is very close to the exact color of your pants or jeans. When you wear a shirt and pant of the same color, it looks like a uniform.

Opting for a pattern on a shirt is fine, just keep to a minimal pattern and make sure that everything else that you choose is neutral.

Socks -
Socks should be close to the color of your pants. As for shoes, avoid brown shoes unless you are dressing casually; business work attire should be accompanied by black shoes.

Here are a few common color pairings that can assist you in putting outfits together:

- Use these in conjunction with the suggestions above and you will have no trouble with your color-coordination:

- Light colors (pastels) should be paired with dark grey or black pants. Wearing a pastel shirt with, say, tan pants might just make you look like an Easter egg.

- Two bright, vivid colors should not be worn at the same time - choose only one. Otherwise, your outfit could induce headaches in passersby.

- Wearing different shades of one color from head to toe is a good idea. For example, wearing a pair of navy pants, a light blue button shirt, and a dark blue cardigan would look quite nice.

We all like to look our best. However, we all don't always seem to know how to make that happen. There's just so much to think about.

We need to be able to accessorize our clothing, choose the right haircuts, and more. It's a lot of pressure - especially since everyone is always telling us that we "only get one chance to make a first impression."

So, here are some fashion and style tips that can help you look your best every day:

1. When in doubt, it is always better to be overdressed than to be underdressed. For example, if you aren't certain about how you are to dress for the barbecue party that your boss is throwing (Is it considered a business event? Or is it a casual backyard party?), it would be better to err on the side of caution and overdress-in this case, you would go for business casual rather than backyard casual.

2. A neatly trimmed hairstyle is essential. That isn't to say that your hair needs to be cut short-this is merely saying that your hair needs to be cut neatly. Surfer-boy type styles really don't appear very serious or professional; therefore, if you are sporting a hairstyle like this type of unstructured style, you will not put off a good impression. So, make sure that your hair is neatly trimmed.

3. Facial hair needs to be well-taken care of as well. Men without beards need to be clean-shaven. If you do opt to wear a beard, keep it very short and extremely neat at all times. Do not let it grow more than a fraction of an inch before trimming. Additionally, nose and ear hair needs to be controlled.

4. Stay away from trends that are too young for you. Don't look at what the teenagers are wearing and try to copy those trends. Likewise, don't shop at the same stores as where your teenage son shops - or, at every least, stay away from the young men's department.

5. Go easy on the aftershave and cologne. Many men go overboard on this, assuming that more is better. Well, more is not better-more can be nauseating to everyone else around you.

Follow these tips, and you will definitely make a good first impression on anyone.

Men's fashion clothing trends really started in the seventeen hundreds - in eighteenth-century France, during the reign of Louis XIV, men were referred to as the 'peacocks of fashion'. They wore very decorative Rhinegrave breeches covered in lace and bows made of the finest silks and satins; impeccably clean white linen shirts with lavish cravats; and overcoats called justaucorps adorned with lavish buttons and gold braid that stretched from chin to knee.

This form of conspicuous consumption was considered the epitome of good taste. After the French Revolution (1789), however, the canons of tasteful dress changed dramatically. Simplicity, starkness and refinement became the order of the day with long trousers, vests, frock coats and top hats defining the role of the gentleman in society.

Well-tailored suits made from the finest cloth became the requisite of determining your position in society, and your delegation to the ranks of the upper classes. Tales of the infamous dandy, Beau Brummel, abound: a man who befriended the Prince of Wales in the early nineteenth century and set the benchmark for cleanliness and restraint in male attire, with understated but beautifully fitted and tailored clothing. He is credited with introducing and establishing the start of modern men's clothing suits.

English men's fashion clothing, underlined by the British landed gentry, established the European stylistic trends of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was during this time that the tailors of London's Saville Row became famous for exquisitely cut and tailored garments for men.

Saville Row was built between 1731 and 1735, originally as part of the Burlington Estate. Beau Brummel helped to establish its reputation as he patronized the tailors congregated on the Burlington Estate, who then started to occupy premises on Saville Row. Even contemporary designers, responsible for men's designer clothes of the day, including John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, chose to serve an apprenticeship in Saville Row, and no matter how outlandish their fashion garments appear, they retain respect and admiration for their industry through their masterful tailoring expertise.

In 1818, Harry Sands Brooks established Brooks Brothers, one of America's oldest retailers, known for its classic and conservative styling. It was the first company to offer ready-made men's clothing suits to individuals like sailors, who were only on shore leave for a short time, and gold miners before they headed west.

For over 100 years, they also supplied uniforms to the US military. The innovations of Brooks Brothers include the first summer seersucker suit (1830), mens clothing suits and beachwear made from madras plaid (1890), the button-down collar shirt worn during polo matches (1896), Shetland wool sweaters (1904) and the first wash-and-wear Dacron and polyester shirts (1953).

Always synonymous with fashionable, well-constructed garments, they attracted the business of celebrities such as the Rolling Stones and other pop stars of the 60s.The British company Marks and Spencer bought Brooks Brothers in 1988.

After the Second World War, the influence of American ready-to-wear clothing had a worldwide impact on the direction of business suits and men's casual clothing. Designers like as Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein offered the ultimate in men's casual lifestyle dressing.

Influenced by Italian designer, Giorgio Armani, and his informal, easy-fitting clothing, a new era in menswear was born. This loose-fitting styling was reinforced by menswear designed by the Japanese designers, Yohji Yamamoto and Rei and was adopted by new age, avant-garde males.
